Painting Tutorial - Tabletop Burnished Steel/Iron Body Armour

So continuing with the Steel Legion veterans I have knocked up a tutorial for the steel body armour.

If you look at the art work for the Steel Legion; and this picture is one of the reasons I chose Steel legion as my guard, you will notice that their helms etc is a very brown burnished steel rather than a typical steel colour.  In my mind this is both a perfect compliment but at the same time contrast to the khaki coats.

I chose the following colours to replicate this, Vallejo Model Colour Black, Reaper Master Series Scorched Metal and Reaper Master Series Aged Pewter.

Started off with a basecoat of 50/50 Black/Scorched Metal, this basecoat is only thinned so it can me painted on without leaving brush marks, easy way to test this is have a little undercoated sprue.

The first layer is a mix of Black/Scorched Metal/Aged Pewter at a ratio of 2/2/1, I thin this so that it becomes almost a glaze.  In order the tell the right consistencey pull some paint up the side of the pallette well and the paint should flow back into the well leaving only a residue on the side.  When painting these layers my brush strokes are towards the top edges of the armour.

Next layer is another drop of Aged Pewter into the previous mix at the same consistency focusing on the most light exposed areas

Further drop of aged pewter again same consistency using the same light principle

Final stage is a very watered down Aged Pewter painted on to the top edges in an edge highlighting style

And done

Hope this helps, if you need any help let me know.

Painting Tutorial - Tabletop Khaki Great Coats

I have been asked numerous times by people how I do my Khaki coloured great coats on my Steel Legion.  So i decided to do a picture tutorial to help explain.

I use the following colours , Griffon Tan, Desert Tan, Tusk Ivory, and Blackened Brown all Reaper Master Series paints

I mix up the mixes of the colours as shown in the picture below

The paint is thinned enough that it should pool and not stick to the sides of the pallett wells too much.  I should point out that I paint with paint that is a glaze even for tabletop so the transformation colour wise is very subtle and doesnt become apparant until the end, which is something to remember if you try this and start thinking "FFS Dee nothing is happening".

Start of with a nice smooth coat of Griffon Tan

Next is the first highlight of 50/50 Desert Tan and Griffon Tan, this is applied fairly liberally but with the folds of the cloth in mind.

Next the second highlight of Desert Tan further excentuating the folds, taking into account which areas would be exposed to light.

Next the third highlight of 50/50 Desert Tan/Tusk Ivory further excentuating the previous stages above.

Next I start to work the opposite way adding shade, this will really start to make the folds of the cloth stand out.  The first shade is the 60/40 Griffon Tan/Blackened Brown mix

The previous stage is repeated to build up the shade where needed before moving on to the next shade, pure Blackened Brown this is only really applied to the areas such as where the sides of the coat are pinned up as this would be in a great deal of shade and also I want to define this.

The final stage is the brightest highlight of pure Tusk Ivory, picking out edges and tops of folds etc.

Coat finished!  Sometimes I find the blending has been a little crap, in this instance I might consider a glaze od the 50/50 Griffon Tan/Desert Tan, this will act like a filter and tie all the blends in.

I'm now ready to paint the metal, another tutorial perhaps?

Blitzkreig Bop - Armageddon Steel Legion 101st Infantry - Painting Has Begun!

As the title suggests I finished up the building over the weekend and am straight onto the painting.

Undercoated them black and then airbrushed on a nice even coat of RMS-HD Griffon Tan being the basecoat colour for the coats.  Previously this as the really time consuming part getting a smooth coat over the black.....airbrush has shaved off hours of work

All then I had to do was darken out the webbing and body armour etc for later painting before I then started to paint the actual coats with a brush

I have managed to get the coats done on the Neverborns, Colour Sergeant Sinclair, and the new Company Commander name undeicded as yet (I think I will rename my existing commander as Colonel Sarren and pass his current name Colonel Von Gil to this guy).

Andrej and The Neverborns

Few bits of putty work to do on these and they are ready for painting

Just like to say I am very impressed with the quality of the DKoK Engineers

Whilst I had the tube tool out for the rebreathers I also got the Primaris Psyker converted to the Legion

Blitzkreig Bop - Armageddon Steel Legion 101st Infantry - Gunny Serg "Hartman"

Yes Hartman not Harker!

Wanted to include Harker in my army but didn't want a random unit of Catachans in my army, so out came the clippers and off went his head.

Had the head from a miscast DKoK Engineer that was doing nothing, add a little greenstuff, magic sculpt and grey stuff pop them in a bag shake it about and bish bash bosh

Think it works a treat.

And I named him Gunny Serg Hartman after this man

BULLSHIT I STILL CAN'T HEAR YOU!
